The Maple Conservatory of Dance is pleased to announce that one of its students,
Update: Karen was one of twenty dancers, out of 72 (and only one of two Americans) selected by the judges to perform in the final round on the last day of the Prix de Lausanne! We congratulate Karen on this esteemed honor!
The Prix de Lausanne is a prestigious, international dance competition for young student dancers seeking a professional career. It is open to candidates of all nationalities ages 15-18 and it has been held every year since 1973.
The purpose of the Prix de Lausanne is to facilitate the professional debut of its young prize-winners by granting them scholarships which enable them to improve their skills for a year in one of the schools or professional dance companies which are partners of the Prix.
This year's partners include ABT II, Hamburg Ballet John Neumeier, Houston Ballet II, National Ballet of Canada, Nederlands Dans Theater II, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Royal Ballet School, Royal Danish Ballet School, San Francisco Ballet School, Stuttgart Ballet and the Vienna State Opera Ballet School.
Twenty dancers from the competition are selected to advance to the final round and eight receive a study grant. Those not selected for the final take part in an audition class attended by school and professional company directors.
Past prize winners include Seo Hee of American Ballet Theatre, Davit Karapetyan and Maria Kochetkova of San Francisco Ballet, and Benjamin Millepied of the New York City Ballet.
This year's selected dancers come from around the world, including Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Karen is only one of four dancers selected from the United States.
The Maple Conservatory congratulates Karen on being selected for the 2009 Prix de Lausanne and we wish her a safe journey to Switzerland and the best of luck at the competition come this January!
