Conservatory Dress Code

The Maple Conservatory has defined the following dress code for our Conservatory classes.

This dress code does not apply to those attending our Open Division ballet classes. (Just wear comfortable & appropriate dance attire.) However, our dress code does apply to those attending our open Jazz and Modern classes (see below).

Mommy & Me Classes (Ages 2 & 3)

Dancers and parents should wear comfortable clothes that they can move in. Please no jeans, costumes or tutus as they can restrict the dancer's movements.

Creative Movement Classes (Ages 3 & 4)

Dancers are welcome to wear any comfortable clothes that they can move in, although leotards, tank unitards and ballet slippers are often the attire of choice for girls. Boys should wear shorts or sweat pants.

Pre-Ballet Level Classes (Ages 4-7)

Females: Pink solid-colored camisole leotard, footed pink tights*, pink ballet slippers** and ballet skirt. (The skirt should not fall below the mid-thigh.) Note that the skirt is an integral part of class and is required.

Males: White t-shirt tucked in neatly (or white leotard), black tights, white socks, and black or white ballet slippers.

Pre-Lyrical Classes: For females, pink leotard, convertible pink tights, dance shorts (optional) and pink ballet slippers or tan jazz boots.

Primary Ballet Level Classes (Ages 6-8)

Females: White solid-colored camisole leotard, footed pink tights*, pink ballet slippers** and ballet skirt. (The skirt should not fall below the mid-thigh.) Note that the skirt is an integral part of class and is required.

Males: White t-shirt tucked in neatly (or white leotard), black tights, white socks, and black or white ballet slippers.

*Convertible tights are permitted if the dancer will be taking another dance class immediately following ballet class, such as Lyrical.

**Please do not wear "imitation" ballet slippers.

Level B7 through B1 Classes (Ages 7-19)

Females: Black solid-colored camisole leotard, footed or convertible pink tights, pink ballet slippers and pink pointe shoes (as required). Tights must be worn underneath the leotard. Females in Level B4 through B1 may wear colored leotards for Saturday classes; they may also wear a skirt for Variations classes.

Males: White t-shirt tucked in neatly (or white leotard), black tights, white socks, and black or white ballet slippers.

Conservatory female students in Primary Ballet Level and Levels B7 through B1 will also be assigned a colored hip alignment belt according to their placement level. Each Conservatory female student will receive a complimentary belt after their placement has been determined.

Visit DiscountDance.comThe Maple Conservatory wishes to thank Discount Dance Supply for their generous donation of the hip alignment belts to commemorate the launching of our new Conservatory Program!

Also, for girls the hair must always be neatly pulled back in a bun. Boys hair should also be neat.

No jewelry should be worn in class except for small pierced earrings and simple rings.

Conservatory Adjunct Classes (Jazz, Modern, etc.)

For our Conservatory adjunct classes such as Jazz and Modern, our Conservatory dress code still applies.

For Jazz, snug-fitting shorts or jazz pants and a snug-fitting top are suggested.(Please, no baggy shorts or gym shorts.) Jazz shoes are not necessary, but we do recommend Foot Paws (not foot thongs as they wear out quickly).

Note that shoes with hard heels are not permitted. Shoes that can cause damage or make marks on the studio floors are not allowed in class.

What's Not Appropriate For Class

Leotards that are not appropriate nor allowed in our Conservatory classes include the following:

Costume-like or sequined leotards, leotards that are low-cut or too revealing, halter-style leotards, leotards with "strappy" or ornate back designs, two-toned colored leotards or leotards with different colored straps or embellishments (i.e., leotards must be all of one color — whether it's pink, white or black), and leotards that are ill-fitting (i.e., too baggy or too short in the torso).

Footless tights (i.e., tights that do not cover the feet) are also not allowed.

As a guideline for appropriate or recommended camisole* leotard styles, we prefer the following styles of leotards:

* Note that our Conservatory dress code stipulates camisole-style leotards. Cap- or short-sleeved and long-sleeved style leotards are not permitted.

For a recommended or preferred skirt style, see Mirella MS12A.
