Our Mission

View SI brochure (pdf)The curriculum of the Maple Conservatory of Dance Summer Programs are founded on the highest standards of classical ballet technique. All ballet technique classes are taught by former members of major dance companies — accomplished professionals in the field who have an innate understanding of what it takes to succeed in today's dance world. Our limited class sizes provide each student with a unique opportunity to work with world-class instructors in an environment that is both meaningful and effective.

Our 2008 Summer Intensive Programs

Our summer programs are open to the entire dance community and they are:

Technique Intensive (June 16-20)
A five-day program for intermediate dancers ages 12-14 and advanced dancers ages 13-23 who wish to prepare for their upcoming summer intensives

Summer Session For Beginning/Intermediate Dancers (June 16-July 25) New!
A 4-6 week program for male & female dancers ages 8-12 who wish to continue progressing in their ballet technique after the end of our Conservatory program's spring term. All dancers in the community are welcome to apply. Non-conservatory students must take a placement class before June 1.

4-Week Intensive (June 30-July 26)
A four-week program for male & female dancers ages 12-22 who want to receive a high caliber of dance training; supervised, dormitory-style housing is available at the UC Irvine campus

Junior Intensive (August 4-16)
A two-week program for young male & female dancers ages 9 to 11 who want to build a solid foundation in ballet technique and learn about a variety of dance-related topics

2-Week Technique Intensive For Advanced Dancers (August 11-22)
A two-week program for advanced male & female dancers ages 12-23 who wish to continue their "intensive" training in August before their regular dance training begins in the fall

Audition Dates & Times

Admission to our summer programs is by audition only (except for our Pre-Ballet summer session). Students are to audition in-person at one of the following audition classes at the Maple Conservatory studios:

Sunday, February 3, 2008
Ages 9-11 at 2pm-3:30pm (Registration at 1pm)
Ages 12-23 at 4:00pm-6:00pm (Registration at 3:00pm)
Sunday, March 16, 2008
Ages 9-11 at 2pm-3:30pm (Registration at 1:30pm)
Ages 12-23 at 4:00pm-6:00pm (Registration at 3:30pm)

Limited spaces remain — students may still contact us to make an appointment to audition at our studio if they were unable to attend an audition class.

Audition fee is $20, payable by cash or check. Students should bring two full-body photos: 1) first arabesque and 2) developpe second position, wearing practice clothes and no skirts. Write the dancer's name, address and phone number on the back of both photos.

Students attending one of our audition classes will receive written notification of their audition results within two weeks of their audition.

Video auditions

Students interested in our 4-week summer intensive and are unable to attend an audition class due to extenuating circumstances may submit a 10-minute video (VHS format) or DVD. Video or DVD must consist of the following:

Males and females at the barre: Plies, tendu & degage, fondue & developpe (front, side, back), grand battements
Center for females (all females 13 years & older must wear pointe shoes): Developpe devant, a la seconde (facing camera), arabesque (profile), echappe combination with passé, pirouettes (en dehor, en dedan), 16 jumps in first position, petite allegro, grande allegro, pique turns
Center for males: Developpe devant, a la seconde (facing camera), arabesque (profile), pirouettes (en dehor, en dedan), 16 jumps in first position, petite allegro, grande allegro, entrechat quatre or six (16 bars), single or double tour en l'air, grand pirouettes in a la seconde (for advanced males)

Send the video or DVD, along with the two required photos, the completed audition form and $20 audition fee (check or money order made payable to the Maple Conservatory of Dance) to:

Videos or DVDs must be postmarked by April 15, 2008. Videos/DVDs and photos will be archived and not returned.

Dress Code

The dress code for our summer programs is the following:

Males:

Hair, including bangs, must be neatly combed back out of face and secured
Dance belt with plain form-fitting white t-shirt (tucked in) or white leotard worn under tights
Black tights. Tights must cover feet or white socks must be worn. White socks, if worn, should not be higher than mid-calf.
Black or white ballet shoes

Females:

Hair must be worn in a bun or similar style for classes; all bangs must be neatly pinned or sprayed back
Black solid-colored camisole leotard (with bra if appropriate); colored leotards may be worn for Saturday classes
Footed or convertible pink tights; tights must be worn underneath the leotard
Pink ballet slippers and pink pointe shoes (as required)
Skirts may be worn for variations class

Scholarships

The Maple Conservatory offers a limited number of scholarships during the summer program. Scholarships are merit-based and are awarded at the time of acceptance. Students wishing to accept a scholarship award must notify the School of their intent to attend the program by April 1, 2008. Scholarships are awarded by a committee process.
